Hazel McCallion is ver well know as an authentic and transparent lady. She was the first mayor to hand in an annual operating budget to citizens for their view. Under her leader ship The city "Mississauga" has not had to borrow money and has had no debt since 1978.Also this lady is influencing and direct. In 2006 she saved a man who wanted to commit suicide on a ledge with several police around him. She spoke to the man and told him to come down and the man claimed to her request and serenaded by the police. McCaLlion matters to our community because she is a genius, a brainy and an amazing lady.Since her term began In politics Mississauga had become an independent city.Finally Hazel mccallion is worthwhile , since she joned elections twelf times and won everytime.More than that she refused to take political donations . She instead asked her helpers to donate for the charity.





Personal life


Hazel Mccalion was born in february/14/1921 port Daniel on the Gaspe Coast ofQuebec. She had two sisters, Linda Maude Adaams and Margret Gwendolyn and two brothers, Herbert Lorne Journeaux ,and James Wilson Lockhart Journeaux. Her father Herbert Armand Journeaux was a fishing man. A fishing and a canning company belonged to him. Her mother Maude Travers was a housewife and ran the family farm. After she graguated from high school in Quebec she recieved a university honourr but financialy her family coudnt aford it to get their daughter into a university and so on she atended business secretarial school in Quebec City and Montreal. After working in Montreal, she was transferred by Canadian Kellogg company to Toronto.





She met and married her hasbend Sam. She has three children from him,Peter, Paul and Linda, daughter-in-law Donna Marie married to Paul, and granddaughter Erika.On tv Mccalion always stated that her hasbend was always enthusiastice, understanding and inspiering of her career politics. The Mississauga Booster community newspaper was found by Mcallion and sam. It is a paper which now their son edits and puplishes. sadly sam died of Alzheimer's disease. The Sam McCallion Day Centre was created by the Alzheimer Society of Peel to honour Sam, the founder of the annual Streetsville Bread and Honey Festival. Hazel still lives in Streetsville.








Political career


Hazel Mccallion bbegan her career in streetsville.By the time she was chosen to be the mayor of Mississauga. she had sat basiclly every committee in Peel Region and the city of Mississauga. As well as She has served on gaverning of many federal and provincial committees and organization. She was first elected mayor in 1978,just closely she beat the popular incumbent Ron A. Searle. a 1979 public health and safety crisis appeared.On November 10, a Canadian Pacific train carrying toxic chemicals took out of a massevly populated area of Mississauga close to Mavis Road. A large explosion and fire appeared as hazardous chemicals spilled. McCallion, along with the Peel Regional Police and other governmental authorities, oversaw an orderly and peaceful evacuation of the entire city. She puled her ankle in the crisis, but she kept hanging on to press conferences and update conference. There was no loss of life or serious injuries as the same time as week emergency and Mississauga aquired international renown for the calm evacuation of its then 200,000 settelers





The Mayor represented the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) on the Electricity Transition Committee for the Ministry of Electricity, Science and Technology. In February 2002, Mayor McCallion was assgined Chair of the Central Ontario Smart Growth Panel by the Hon.Minister of Municipal Affairs. The panel, made up of 22 local government officials and business leaders, advised the provincial government on how to plan for growth for the central region in both the short and long term. beyond to the heavey growth issue, the bored included other issues such as gridlock and waste disposal. The bored was the largest in the province, contained the cities of Brantford and Kawartha Lakes, the Counties of Dufferin, She is the first woman to hold such significant positions as President of the Streetsville and District Chamber of Commerce; President of the Anglican Young Peoples' Association of Canada; Mayor of Streetsville and Mayor of Mississauga. She was chosen one of the "American Women of the Year" in Who's Who of American Women Mayor McCallion also holds Germany's highest individual honour, the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, for her role in bringing German companies to Canada. In addition, Her Worship has been awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship by Rotary International in 1985 and 1992, awarded the Lions International President's Award, awarded the Helen Keller Fellowship from the Mississauga Lions Clubs and named a Melvin Jones Fellow for dedicated humanitarian services by Lions Clubs Interna|||Hazel McCallion is known for being an authentic and forthright lady.
